Designing slides to support
someone telling a story

An investor presentation inherited mid-development, with a CEO who wanted the audience to watch him rather than read his slides. The challenge was deciding what belonged on screen and what belonged in the room.

Final investor presentation developed for a live presentation. The slides were designed to support the CEO's narrative rather than function as a standalone document.
The brief

I inherited an investor presentation after the previous Marketing Manager left the company. Following a short meeting with the CEO, I recorded the discussion, transcribed it, organised the key points into structured notes, and requested his presentation script.

Together, these became the foundation for understanding not just what information needed to be included, but how he intended to tell the story.

The challenge

The challenge wasn't simply redesigning the slides. The CEO repeatedly emphasised visuals over text. He wanted the audience's attention to stay on the presentation, using each slide only as a brief visual reference before returning their focus to the speaker.

That required deciding which information belonged in the spoken narrative and which should be communicated visually.

The approach
"I wasn't designing slides to be read. I was designing them to support someone telling a story."

Rather than treating the deck as a document, I approached it as a presentation system. I translated the recorded discussion into structured notes, organised relationships between ideas, and used the presentation script to establish the narrative flow before redesigning the slides.

Throughout the process, the focus shifted from adding information to removing it. Dense text was replaced with photographs, diagrams and simple charts that reinforced the CEO's message without competing for attention.

Reflection

This project changed the way I think about presentation design. Rather than viewing slides as standalone documents, I learned to design them as part of a live communication system.

The work was less about making attractive slides and more about deciding how information should be distributed between the speaker and the screen.
